Why The Name Spirals Early Learning?

The spiral is an ancient symbol etched into the annals of human history. The spiral appears everywhere in nature. From ancient shells of molluscs, galaxy formations, tornados, to our unique fingerprints, and DNA molecules, all which have a spiral form.

Its origins date back thousands of years, where it has graced the cave walls of many indigenous peoples across the globe. For the Aboriginal people, the spiral denotes the waterhole or a campsite, a place that is seen as sacred, where people meet for physical and spiritual sustenance. The symbol of a spiral also denotes a never-ending journey of discovery and rediscovery.
(Knudsen, 2004, The Circle & Spiral: A Study of Australian Aboriginal and New Zealand Māori Literature).

The pedagogy and research-based approach implemented at our service, is the Montessori Spirals Curriculum, founded by theorists Maria Montessori and Jerome Bruner. This curriculum supports the following concepts, underpinned through play-based learning, the NQF and the EYLF:
• Everything is interrelated, one activity leads to many others
• Children move from concrete towards abstract understanding
• We work from the big picture to increasing detail, scaffolding understanding
• Major themes are revisited and looked at in greater depth

With all of this considered, it was an obvious choice to name our service.
